Weyerhaeuser works with other organizations to develop the potential of trees and other woody plants as sources of medicine and nutritional supplements. For example, we worked with the National Cancer Institute and Bristol Meyers-Squibb to develop a renewable and natural source of the cancer-fighting drug paclitaxel, which is derived from yew trees. Weyerhaeuser identified a variety of yew that is an exceptionally potent source of paclitaxel, then developed methods to cultivate that variety in a nursery, harvest the biomass, and process it to supply consistent concentrations of the desired compounds. In the process, we eliminated the financial incentive for harvesting the rare Pacific yew in the wild, protecting a threatened species.
